Winds Dog Park, Thornton, Colorado
In July 2010 the City
of Thornton Open Space and Project Management
Department opened a new fenced, off-leash
dog park at 136th Avenue and Holly Street.
Early in the planning process, the department
included provisions for dog waste composting
with EnviroWagg. There are approximately
12,000 dogs in the city and they contribute
more than 1,640 tons of organic waste to
local landfills each year. This program
represents a small step toward diverting
that waste into a useable garden product.
This upcycling program is truly a community
effort! Open Spaces provided signage, dispensers,
a small dumpster designated for dog waste
and separate bins for trash. Local businesses
are entirely covering the cost of the program
by adopting pet stations at the park and
printed messages on the compostable dog
waste bags. Friends
of Retired Greyhounds has graciously
volunteered to help keep the park clean.
